Turn on proctoring

Web proctoring for low-stakes rounds, the desktop app for strict ones, no extra credits either way, and every flag reviewed by a person.

Before you start

  • A round that is worth proctoring. Not every screen is.
  • A plan on Growth or Scale. Proctoring unlocks there.
  • No extra credits. Proctoring costs the same as an unproctored round.
Steps

5 steps, in order.

1

Decide between web and desktop

There are two levels. Web proctoring runs in the browser and suits low-stakes rounds. The desktop proctoring app runs strict rounds and bundles video, the code editor and security monitoring in one place. It is a cross-platform download the candidate installs.

  • Use web proctoring for a first screen. Save the desktop app for final rounds and anything with an offer behind it.
2

Turn it on for the round

Proctoring is a modifier on an assessment, not a round of its own. On Round Configuration, turn on Require desktop app to push candidates into the ExpertHire desktop app for stronger proctoring. Leave it off on the rounds that do not need it. A proctored assessment costs exactly what an unproctored one costs.

Round Configuration. The Require desktop app toggle sits under Difficulty Level, Round type and Non-negotiables.

3

Know what is detected

Known AI-assistant overlay tools. Signs of impersonation. Tab switching during live rounds. There is also post-interview video analysis. In a coding test the banner shows the tab-switch count while the candidate works.

4

Tell candidates before they join

Say which rounds are proctored and what that involves, especially if the desktop app is required. A candidate who finds out at the start of a timed round loses minutes to the download.

  • The desktop app is an install. Give candidates the link ahead of the round, not at the start of it.
5

Review flags yourself

Signals are surfaced to a human reviewer. They are never an automated pass or fail. We do not auto-reject anyone. Open the report, read the flag next to the transcript and the code, and make the call yourself.

Malpractice status sits on the report next to the evidence, for a person to judge.

What you get

At the end of this guide.

Two levels of proctoring, browser-based or the desktop app.

Detection of AI-assistant overlays, impersonation signs and tab switching, plus post-interview video analysis.

A malpractice status on the candidate report, next to the evidence.

A decision that stays with a human being.

Common mistakes

What goes wrong, and the fix.

Proctoring every round by default.

It costs no extra credits, but it adds friction for candidates. Use it where the stakes justify it.

Assuming a flag is proof.

A flag is a signal for review. Read it alongside the transcript before deciding anything.

Requiring the desktop app without warning.

Tell candidates in the invite and give them time to install it.

Wiring auto-reject to integrity signals.

You cannot, and you should not want to. Auto-reject low scorers is a score cutoff on the Workflow step, and it is off until you turn it on. Integrity always goes to a person.
